  • DNA Ancestery testing done on cats!

So their are alot of stigmas in the cat society regaurding DNA testing and I think lots of breeders and buyers get confused when it comes to getting DNA testing done. So lets get some insight!

There are two well known types that everyone should know about.

Ancestory DNA (For Fun) testing which is going to be wisdom panels and such.

In Depth Health and Diversity testing (Breeder Focused) which is your Optimal Selection and other brands.

    So whats the issue?

If a reputable breeder sells a kitten and the buyer does the Ancestory DNA test there shouldnt be any surprises right?

    Wrong….

Wisdom Panel, like other DNA testing services, may not always identify a cat as 100% purebred, even if it’s a pedigree (registered pure breed) cat, because the genetic makeup of many cat breeds is not as distinct or old as that of many dog breeds. Also, the test compares a cat’s DNA to a database of known breeds, and if a cat’s ancestry includes breeds not in the database, the results may be less precise.

    Effects of a Limited Database:

Wisdom Panel’s database is based on validated breeds, and if a cat’s ancestry includes breeds not in the database, the results may identify related breeds, but not the exact ancestry.

Overlap in Genetic Markers of Well Known Cat Breeds:

There can be overlap in the genetic markers of different breeds, making it difficult to distinguish between them with complete accuracy.

    Test Focus:

Wisdom Panel, and other DNA tests, are not designed to identify a cat’s entire ancestry but to identify the breeds present in its recent ancestry.

In essence, even if a cat is pedigree, meaning it’s registered with a breed organization, its DNA may not perfectly match the purebred results of a DNA test due to the factors mentioned above.

So whats the take away from this?

Ancestery DNA tests are fun for Mixed Breed Cats but buyers should ultimately rely on their breeder to show that the cat is able to be or already registered for registration through a recognized Registry such as TICA, CFA and so on.

Ive listed below the 2 different tests weve refrenced in this topic below!
